Introduction/ Descriptor:
Workers’ compensation statistics show that manual handling injuries account for approximately 40% of all workplace accidents - this is the biggest cause of injuries in Australian workplaces. Thousands of workers are injured doing manual handling tasks that are unsafe or inappropriate, resulting in national and state-based legislation and regulations requiring employers to provide adequate training in safe manual handling to their employees.
This relatively short but interactive, practical program encourages an understanding of ways to engage in safe manual handling practices and to avoid the associated risks, when at work...and after hours! Several participant hands-on demonstrations supported by background theory and information make this an interesting, worthwhile investment. Participants conduct a ‘real life’ hazard identification & control process to reduce or prevent potential manual handling hazards in the workplace – making their jobs safer, easier, and ultimately more productive.
Topics covered include:
- Defining and understanding the concept of manual handling
- Knowledge of the body’s muscular-skeletal system
- Knowledge and appreciation of the types of injury caused by manual handling
- Awareness and appreciation of safe manual handling practices
- Correct lifting techniques
- Hierarchy of Control measures
- Conducting a Manual Handling Hazard Assessment
Who should attend: The universal nature of the subject matter makes this program suitable for all staff from any type of organisation. As a refresher program, or for those totally unfamiliar with safe manual handling practices, this ‘preventative’ session is a must for any workplace serious about the safety and welfare of their staff. NB - FACT: Legislation requires employers to provide adequate training in safe manual handling practices!
Format / Program structure: Highly interactive workshop that includes group discussion, skills practice sessions, supported by a brief slide presentation.
